Inside an Artist's Mind.

Elizabeth Ullmann shares her artist experience and what it’s like to be a young, freelance artist in the world today. We dive deep into discussing her background, her isnpiration, her goals and much more.

Elizabeth is a Texas State graduate with a Bachelor’s in photography and printmaking. She practices both forms and she enjoys the way they interact with each other. Although she loves both, she prefers printmaking because of the hands on quality and how you much you can experiment with the various techniques.

Elizabeth’s creative mind started at a young age. She grew up working on art projects in elementary school, creating beach scenes with sand, already obsessing over unusual techniques. One of my her passions is traveling and a lifelong dream of hers is go to every state in the United States in search of the perfect town for her personal gallery. Not only will this be a gallery to display her art but it will also be a coffee shop with delicious baked goods. Baking pies began with my grandma on her ranch and soon it became tradition for me to bake an apple pie every Thanksgiving. I am creative and passionate about the beauty in the world and all my interests seem somewhat related.

When it comes to printmaking, Elizabeth is fascinated by all of the different aspects it entails, especially the final printing process. It is a bit of a mystery when you prepare the plate and send it through the press. She never knows how the final image will look until she pulls the print. She also incorporates an interesting technique, known as chine colle, in the majority of her images. This process is when a surface is bonded to a heavier support during the printing process. Prior to printing she will cut down the chine colle, spritz the back with water and the dust the page with glue paste. The chine colle will then be placed on her plate followed by her paper, taken from the sink, and then covered with felts for protection as it is sent through the press. This process allows for many possibilities but she will also incorporate some detailed ink work her prints as well. She says that these details are the reason she is a printmaker and why she loves it so much.

When it comes to the next steps in her career, I asked Elizabeth what she sees in her future as an artist and what her goals are as an artist. “In the years to come my work will be exhibited in museums among other great creators. I am also interested in providing pieces to be displayed in a variety of businesses. This year I will also be focusing on implementing a solo exhibition. As mentioned earlier a later goal of mine is to have my own gallery space displaying my prints and other creations of mine,” said Ullmann.
